When Everything Everywhere All at Once arrived, one of the strangest things about it was not the multiverse. Multiverses had already become familiar cultural furniture. Marvel had them, Rick and Morty had them, science fiction had been throwing alternate timelines at us for decades. As alternate lives pressed against this one (whether as a singer, a chef, a movie star, or a woman with hot-dog fingers), reality expanded into an infinite collection of possibilities, all while consciousness kept asking the very ordinary question: why this life rather than another?
Contemporary culture’s fixation on parallel worlds (evident in how video games let us respawn, social media allows us to curate identities, and artificial intelligence generates strangely familiar images of impossible places) philosophically reveals our deep fascination with alternate realities. Somewhere, another version of you chose differently. Underneath all this entertainment lies an old philosophical anxiety that reality may be larger than our experiential categories, existing beyond the neat boxes into which our minds continuously try to divide the world.
Our senses seem to reflect reality, but the brain actually constructs it from raw data.
Kant asked, what must the human mind contribute for experience to be possible at all? His answer was radical. We do not simply receive a ready-made world. The mind actively structures experience. Before making judgments, our minds have already structured experience. Kant called these the categories of understanding. They are not things we discover sitting inside the universe. They are conditions through which a world becomes intelligible to us.
Kant’s categories are famously arranged into twelve forms: unity, plurality, totality; reality, negation, limitation; substance and accident, cause and effect, community; possibility, existence, and necessity. Jargon aside, the intuition is simple. When something happens, we don’t merely register that something happened. We automatically ask what caused it. When we encounter objects, we treat them as persisting things with properties. When we encounter several things, we understand them as one, many, or a whole. We distinguish possible, actual, and inevitable.
When you drop your phone, you instantly track the fall, understand the cause, and expect gravity to pull it to the floor. If the phone breaks, you understand the broken screen as a new state of the same thing. In a fraction of a second, your mind has organized an event through concepts of substance, causality, unity, change, and actuality. You didn’t consciously choose any of them. Something happened to you.
Reality isn’t neatly pre-labeled as truth or lie. Consider the sentence, “The phone fell because gravity pulled it downward.” We normally imagine ourselves comparing that sentence with reality and discovering whether it corresponds to what happened. Kant would not necessarily deny the importance of correspondence. What he changes is the background assumption. Mind structures experience before truth applies. It becomes: how does reality become experienceable as the kind of thing about which such a statement can be made?
This is where my earlier instinct about true and false needs to be modified. It is tempting to call true and false linguistic inventions, as if humans arbitrarily painted a raw universe black and white. Kant suggests something subtler. Categories aren’t arbitrary conventions. They are deeper than individual words. They belong to the architecture of human understanding itself. Language expands mind, not creates it. The mistake may therefore not be believing that truth is constructed. The mistake may be assuming that construction means arbitrariness.
This distinction is important because “constructed” has become one of those words that can mean almost anything. Money is constructed. Nations are constructed. Gender roles are constructed. Legal systems are constructed. Internet culture is constructed. But saying something is constructed does not mean it is imaginary or meaningless. A border is constructed, yet you can still be arrested for crossing one. A traffic light is a cultural convention, yet walking through the red light can put you in front of a truck. Organized constructs become real.
Kant gives us another kind of construction: not the social construction of institutions, but the cognitive structuring that makes an experienced world possible in the first place.
The difference becomes clearer if we think about color. Physics gives us electromagnetic wavelengths. Human beings experience red, blue, green, orange, purple. Neither description is simply “the real one” replacing the other. Physics and perception address different things. Something exists outside us, but our senses filter every detail. We don’t walk around perceiving 650 nanometers. We see red. The distinction seems trivial until we realize how much of everyday reality works this way. We inhabit our own limits.
Kant’s distinction between phenomena and noumena becomes relevant here. Phenomena are things as they appear to us within the structures of possible human experience. The noumenon, often described as the “thing-in-itself,” refers to reality considered independently of those conditions. Kant argues we cannot look past our cognitive filters. We can’t. Raw reality remains unexperienced. This is deeply frustrating because our imagination immediately wants to ask what reality “really looks like” without human categories. But perhaps that question already assumes that reality must look like something.
Think about trying to imagine a completely perspective-free photograph. You can take a photograph from farther away, from above, underwater, through a microscope, through an infrared camera. But every photograph still has a position, a medium, a resolution, a frame. Remove the frame, and you have not necessarily produced a perfect view of reality. You just changed reality’s frame. Kant’s insight has a similar shape. Lenses are revisable. But we cannot occupy some magical position outside all possible human conditions and compare our representation directly with reality-in-itself.
This makes our fascination with “objective reality” slightly ironic. Objectivity is framed by tools and assumptions. A particle detector does not simply reveal “the particle.” Theory interprets the readings. A medical scan does not hand us disease itself. It produces patterns that trained observers interpret as tissue, inflammation, tumors, blood flow, or something else. Objectivity requires structure. It is the disciplined management of conceptual structure.
None of this means that reality is whatever we want it to be. This is where Kant is much more interesting than simplistic relativism. If I decide that gravity doesn’t exist, the floor remains extremely unconvinced. Human categories structure experience, but they do not give us unlimited creative control over what happens. There is resistance. Reality pushes back. We can interpret a storm in many cultural ways, but we cannot negotiate with the falling tree. Ideas drive reality. The world is not passive clay. It constrains the categories we successfully use.
History is a record of evolving categories. Ancient people organized the world differently from medieval Europeans, who organized it differently from Enlightenment thinkers, who organized it differently from contemporary scientists and internet users. The categories of everyday culture change constantly. Social concepts change quickly. Our grandparents could not have experienced an online identity in exactly the way we do because the technological and cultural conditions for that identity did not exist. The possibilities of experience change as our conceptual and social worlds change.
This is where nostalgia becomes philosophically strange. We view the past as revisitable. But we don’t merely lose objects when history changes. We lose categories. Teenagers bored in 1995 faced a completely different world of options than in 2026. Feeds, algorithms, and permanent logs didn’t exist. The same human nervous system inhabited a different conceptual environment. We sometimes call this a change in reality. Perhaps it is better described as a change in the world as experienced.
Technology makes this especially visible. The smartphone did not simply give us a smaller telephone. It reorganized the categories through which we understand social life. “Available” now means something different. “Private” means something different. “Friend” ranges from online connections to lifelong bonds. “News” is no longer something that arrives at a particular hour from a particular institution. “Memory” is increasingly something searchable. The technology changes the environment, but the environment changes what kinds of experiences become intelligible. Suddenly we have new objects, new relationships, new expectations, and new ways of sorting reality.
This also explains why certain fictional works feel prophetic even when their predictions are technologically silly. Black Mirror rarely predicts the future with engineering precision. What it often predicts is a transformation in categories. What happens when reputation becomes a numerical score? What happens when memory becomes externally accessible? What happens when an artificial system becomes socially indistinguishable from a person? The interesting question is not whether the machine works exactly as portrayed. It is what happens when the concepts through which we organize human experience begin to shift.
Technology becomes philosophically important when it changes what we count as a person, an object, a relationship, a memory, or an action.
Artificial intelligence makes the problem almost embarrassingly obvious. We increasingly interact with systems that produce language, images, music, code, and apparently meaningful conversation. So we ask: is it intelligent? Is it creative? Does it understand? Is it reasoning? These questions look like factual questions, but they are also category questions. What exactly counts as “understanding”? What qualifies something as “creative”? How much agency is required before we call an entity an agent? We may imagine that these categories are simply waiting in nature, like species waiting to be identified. The new shatters old boundaries.
History gives us plenty of examples. Consider the category “planet.” Pluto did not suddenly change its physical properties when astronomers reclassified it in 2006. Classification shifted; orbit, mass, and dominance dictate status. The same physical object could remain exactly where it was while its conceptual status changed. This does not prove that categories are arbitrary. It shows something more subtle: reality contains properties, while human beings construct systems for grouping those properties into meaningful kinds.
Language does something similar constantly. We take a continuous world and cut it into nouns and verbs. We say “river” rather than describing every molecule of water. We say “forest” rather than listing every tree. We say “storm” rather than narrating every movement of every air molecule. Far from failures, these abstractions work. They are what make thought possible. Without them, information would overwhelm us. To account for every particle, wave, and vibration, describing a single room would take forever. Abstraction is not the enemy of reality. Navigating requires it.
Back to many-valued logic. Binary compresses complex reality into useful, simple states. The bulb might be flickering. The room might be half illuminated. The switch might be broken. Someone might be uncertain whether the light is actually on. Different contexts require different representational systems. Fuzzy logic can preserve degrees. Three-valued logic can represent uncertainty. Paraconsistent systems can tolerate certain contradictions. The existence of these systems doesn’t prove classical logic is false. It demonstrates that different questions require different structures.
Kant helps explain why this matters philosophically. Never mistake the map for the territory. If I represent a temperature as “cold” or “hot,” I have not discovered that the universe contains exactly two temperatures. If I represent a proposition as true or false, I have not necessarily demonstrated that every possible feature of reality possesses a binary structure. I have selected a conceptual framework appropriate to a particular purpose. The danger begins when the map becomes invisible, and we start treating our method of representation as though it were the world itself.
This is also why the law of non-contradiction should not be casually dismissed as a Western cultural superstition. Aristotle’s logic became enormously influential because it solved real problems. Contradicting departure times ruins communication. Logic preserves consistency. But the existence of useful rules for propositions does not automatically establish that the universe itself must behave like a classical proposition. A contradiction in language and a contradiction in reality are not obviously the same kind of thing. Don’t confuse system logic with absolute reality.
This distinction also changes how we should read Eastern philosophies such as Daoism. It is tempting to make the familiar comparison: the West has black and white, while the East has yin and yang. But this can quickly become a lazy cultural stereotype. Daoism was not simply ancient China inventing fuzzy logic before Western mathematics caught up. Yin and yang are embedded in a much richer cosmological and philosophical tradition concerning transformation, relation, complementarity, and the generation of phenomena.
The interesting lesson is not that “Eastern logic is better.” Culture dictates how we conceptualize change. Our metaphors influence what distinctions feel natural.
The yin-yang symbol remains powerful precisely because it refuses to make opposition completely static. Each side contains a trace of the other. Black is not simply black, white is not simply white, and neither exists independently. Visually, it shows that isolated labels erase the underlying relationships within categories. Yet even yin and yang are still categories. We should not romanticize them as a view from nowhere. They are another conceptual vocabulary, another way of making the world intelligible. The philosophical question is therefore not which culture finally discovered the correct set of categories. Are we aware of our categories?
This might be one reason children can sometimes appear philosophically profound without knowing any philosophy. A child asks why the sky is blue, why adults have different rules, why someone is “bad,” why a dead person cannot come back, why a word means what it means. Adults often answer by supplying another category. Eventually the child learns which questions are normal and which are considered strange. Education is partly the process of acquiring categories.
We learn what counts as an object, an explanation, an emotion, a reason, a fact, a mistake, a person, a success. Civilization is not only the accumulation of knowledge. It is the inheritance of ways of dividing the world into things worth noticing.
Literature has always played with those divisions. Kafka turns ordinary bureaucracy into something nightmarishly metaphysical. Borges builds infinite libraries and identity-dissolving labyrinths. Virginia Woolf dissolves the boundary between external events and internal consciousness. James Joyce pushes language until ordinary categories begin to fracture. Science fiction does the same thing with technology. It introduces something that does not fit comfortably into our existing conceptual boxes and then watches the boxes bend. Literature makes familiar categories strange.
The internet accidentally conducts a similar experiment. Memes constantly recombine categories that were previously separate. A historical photograph becomes a reaction image. A politician becomes a fandom character. A corporate advertisement becomes a joke about capitalism. Philosophy becomes a sound bite. Context collapses, then reforms itself. This exposes how meaning works. A symbol does not carry its entire meaning by itself. Meaning emerges through relationships, conventions, expectations, and contexts. The same image can be sacred in one context and absurd in another.
Categories empower and suffocate us. Algorithms need categories because prediction requires grouping. Watch history drives recommendations. Platforms categorize you according to behavior you never consciously intended to reveal. Suddenly your preferences become a profile. Your profile becomes a prediction. The prediction becomes a recommendation. The recommendation influences your next preference. We create categories to understand ourselves, and then the categories begin feeding information back into us. Maps dictate reality.
Kant gives this loop an older philosophical depth. The mind does not first encounter a perfectly organized world and then add concepts afterward. Understanding participates in making experience intelligible. Knowing categories frame reality creates the illusion that categories create reality. That would be too easy. Kant’s point is almost the opposite. Our conceptual structures make experience possible precisely because there is something given that they organize. There is an encounter between what appears and the conditions under which it can appear. Neither vanishes.
Truth hides a conceptual reversal. Binary truth flattens a richer reality. Intuition matters, but Kant goes deeper than truth. Framing reality as a proposition precedes truth. Before saying “this caused that,” we have encountered events as objects and relations. Before saying “this exists,” we have already distinguished something from nothing. Counting “many” requires first organizing experience into countable units.
So the core projection isn’t reducing multi-valued truth to two values. It is from an unknowable reality into a humanly experienceable world. Truth and falsehood arrive relatively late in the process. They are not the first filters. Mind precedes judgment. The real philosophical mystery is therefore not simply why we have two truth values. It is why the world becomes recognizable as a world at all.
And suddenly the twelve categories of Kant look less like dusty philosophical furniture and more like a strange inventory of assumptions we carry everywhere without noticing. We encounter substance when we treat a person as the same person across time. We encounter causality when we assume events have explanations. We encounter plurality when a crowd becomes “many people.” We encounter totality when we call something “everything.” We distinguish possibility from actuality whenever we say “this could have happened” or “this actually happened.” We rarely announce that we are applying Kantian categories. We live them.
Humbling. We spend enormous amounts of time arguing about whether our beliefs correspond to reality, while rarely asking what kind of creature is doing the corresponding. We criticize other people’s categories while treating our own as transparent. We complain that someone is “biased,” usually meaning that they interpret reality differently from us, as though we ourselves have somehow escaped interpretation. We build political identities, scientific models, religious traditions, economic theories, aesthetic movements, and personal narratives, then gradually forget that they are frameworks. Eventually the framework becomes the landscape.
Changing our minds feels more threatening than learning new facts because it alters our underlying framework. A fact can be incorporated into an existing conceptual structure. But sometimes new information demands a new category. Then the problem is no longer “I learned something I didn’t know.” It becomes “I no longer know what kind of thing this is.” That experience can feel almost existential. Adolescence is full of it. So are political crises, technological revolutions, migration, grief, love, and aging. The world has not necessarily become more chaotic. Our existing categories fail to structure our world.
Perhaps that is what we are witnessing culturally now. Rapid progress brings more than facts. They are producing things that challenge inherited categories. What is work when machines can produce parts of the work? What is authorship when a person prompts a system? What is memory when every conversation can be recorded? What is friendship when intimacy can happen without physical presence? What is personhood when AI mimics personality? The answers may not be waiting somewhere in advance. We may have to rebuild the categories.
Nostalgia makes sense. When the world changes too quickly, we don’t merely miss old things. We miss the stability of the categories surrounding them. A cassette tape was not only a physical object. It belonged to a world in which music had a particular relationship to ownership, scarcity, waiting, collecting, and memory. A cinema ticket belonged to a world of scheduled experiences. A handwritten letter belonged to a world in which communication physically traveled somewhere.
When those structures disappear, the objects can survive in museums while the world that made them meaningful is gone. Nostalgia mourns not only things. It mourns the categories that made those things feel like home.
Kant would not tell us that we can escape these structures and finally see reality without mediation. That fantasy is precisely the problem. Philosophy reveals the invisible. We can notice the categories. We can ask which ones are necessary, which are cultural, which are inherited, which are useful, and which have become prisons. We can compare frameworks without pretending that all frameworks are equally good. We can develop new ways of representing reality without imagining that representation has ceased to be representation.
This leaves me in a stranger place than where I started. Binary truth flattens reality. Kant suggests that the simplification begins even earlier. True versus false isn’t the primary choice. It makes the unknowable habitable. Categories are not cages. They are also the architecture that gives us somewhere to stand. Without them, there may be no intelligible world at all.
And that creates the final paradox. We often imagine philosophical progress as getting closer and closer to reality by removing our assumptions, our biases, our cultural prejudices, our metaphors, our categories. But what if there is no final position outside all categories? What if every attempt to see the world “as it really is” requires another way of organizing what appears? Maybe the goal is not to escape the categories, but to become conscious of them—to hold them lightly enough to revise them when reality resists. Are we mapping reality or our minds?
